The exhibition celebrates the work of one of the most influential Swiss photojournalists of recent decades. Since the late 1980s, Andri Pol has helped shape the visual identity of publications such as Das Magazin, Zeit Magazin, Stern and GEO with his photographs and photo columns. This major retrospective at the Swiss Photo Foundation showcases his diverse body of work, comprising photo-essays, portraits and observations of everyday life – captured around the globe, with recurring focal points including Switzerland, Japan and China. ‘Poliversum’ spans the spectrum from his early works to his current long-term and book projects, presenting individual images alongside press layouts.
Pol’s images combine depth with subtle visual wit and a keen sense for the extraordinary in the everyday. Sometimes astute, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, he documents people, places and situations. His portraits appear spontaneous yet precisely composed; his photo-essays open up surprising perspectives on social, cultural and political realities and identities. With his unmistakable style and ability to capture complex themes with precision, Andri Pol ranks among the most impressive voices in contemporary documentary photography. His photographic universe invites us to marvel, smile and discover – visually astute, close to the world and full of individuality.
