Amidst the hustle and bustle of digital communication, is it even possible any longer to grasp an idea, a hunch, a direction or a tangible thought? Could we try to anchor all these ideals that drive us in practice and in concrete actions, and give them the chance to become a reality?
Protest, resistance, mockery, humour and poetry are often expressed through alternative, ingenious and makeshift forms: leaflets, banners, posters, stickers, graffiti, words engraved or scrawled in permanent marker, and so on. These sensitive and political voices, diverse and vibrant, are those of communities — social, generational, cultural — that are mobilising, springing up like flowers from the pavement, through material, colour and spontaneous action.
CONCRETE LOVE is part of this spirit and tradition, using the medium of the poster and the screen-printing process. Twenty-two students from the CEPV’s higher education photography programme created compositions combining photographs and text, as part of a collective process in which the various layers inherent to the technique come together and interact to form impromptu assemblages based on the surrealist principle of the ‘exquisite corpse’. Through the joy of both spectacular clashes and peaceful harmonies, these choral compositions celebrate the vibrant, creative energy of a smala.
