“Was America” consists of forty-two works from Philip and Rosella Rolla’s private collection and is inspired by a conversation between the collectors Philip and Rosella Rolla and the curator Francesco Zanot. Based on a reflection on the current socioeconomic situation in the United States (Philip Rolla is a native of California) a careful selection has been made from the works in the collection focusing on what the American middle class was and what it represented from the 1930s to the late twentieth century.
The works on display, differing greatly in terms of character and subject, aim to evoke the memory of what America was, not in terms of details or figures, but simply in regard to the atmosphere that existed at the time, without offering sociopolitical opinions.
The catalog includes a text by Francesco Zanot, curator, essayist, and teacher specialized in photography.
