With his camera, Aarau photographer Werner Erne (1931-2024) explored many worlds: As an advertising, industrial and architectural photographer, Erne documented the activities of traditional Swiss companies such as Bally, Kern and Trüb. In his studio, he put sweets, CRT screens and dishwashers in the right light to create appealing images for advertising brochures. As a photographer and co-founder of the basement theatre ‘Innerstadtbühne Aarau’, he played an active role in shaping the cultural scene.
His images bring vernissages, jazz concerts and theatre performances back to life. In his freelance photographs, too, he was always in search of visual orders and structures, geometric surfaces and lines.
His legacy is an important contemporary addition to the museum’s own photo collection of important Aarau photographers. The team at Stadtmuseum Aarau has organised, inventoried and archived the material and put it together in an expressive exhibition, which can be seen from 15 August 2025.
You can find more information on Stadtmuseum Aarau’s website.
